Alias has offered a free downloadable version of its Personal Learning Edition software since last February, when the company offered version 4.02 free for Windows machines, said Chris Ruffo, product manager for Maya Personal Learning Edition. With a few exceptions, the software is the same as the version for commercial use.

However, users are prevented from using the software commercially, and the output is watermarked to identify it. However, the watermark has been removed from the wireframe mode, Ruffo said.“The program was intended to be a market development unit,” Ruffo said. “People can use it as an eval and we welcome that, but the intent was to provide a way for people to learn more about 3D,” including hobbyists, developers, and students, he said.Alias has received 50,000 registrations since the program began, Ruffo said. The Maya Personal Learning Edition runs on the Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP operating systems.Maya first announced the Personal Learning Edition software in January 2002, and roughly half a million users have downloaded it since then, the company said.A beginner’s guide DVD may also be purchased from Alias for $19.99.
